About Urban Circus Arts

Urban Circus Arts use circus, physical theatre and creative arts to inspire, challenge and provoke.

star We offer arts based programmes that use circus, drama, visual arts and music as tools to informally educate.

star They are designed to give the participants a space where they can think and act creatively, come to have fun and take part in exciting activities, whilst also developing skills of problem solving, concentration and self discipline.

Performances

Fire juggling

Urban Circus specialises in comedy shows and fire performances. These can be performed by individuals or a group. The comedy shows utilise a variety of circus apparatus,
with large chunks of slapstick and a dollop of audience participation. They can be worked around a theme or as stand alone entertainment. The fire shows are performed to music and consist of fire diabolo, fire devil stick, fire staff, fire juggling and a liberal sprinkling of fire breathing. An area is cordoned off and an array of props are erected, once these are halite the show begins.

Workshops

Urban Circus has a vast experience of delivering arts workshops. From large festivals to the smallest venue we can tailor these to your needs. We offer other art forms along side circus; visual artist and musicians help us to deliver workshops to community groups. These can either be one off taster sessions for people to try there hands at different creative skills, or they can be issue based workshops. All the sessions are facilitated by professional artists and a qualified community worker will always be present. For younger age group we also provide a range of balloon modelling activities, the focus is on creating large multi balloon sculptures as opposed to the normal one balloon models you generally see.

History
star

Urban Circus Arts started in 1999 as a series of circus workshops at a church hall in Bradford.

Over the next 3 years the workshops expanded and we developed sessions at over 15 schools in the area.

star

In April 2003 Urban Circus Arts went full time with one full time and two part time workers, our schools programme expanded and alongside our one off and short term projects we piloted a 25 week project in four schools.

At the same time we started our after school project expression with two schools and two youth groups.

star 2006 – 2007 saw us consolidate the work of the previous few years and develop new shows and characters. Possibly our most significant development has been the work we have been doing in Romania. We now have a permanent base on the outskirts of Cluj and are planning to start a training centre for circus and physical theatre.

People

star Daryll Hackett Daryll

Daryll is the founder of urban circus: a former street performer, cheese packer and shark hunter Daryll retrained as a youth and community worker in the 1990s with the intention of starting a company that could use circus as a way of informally educating people on a variety of issues. Somehow he managed to pull it off and nobody including himself is quite sure how.

Having achieved combining two of his previous jobs his ambition now is to start a cheese centred shark baiting company based on the Leeds - Liverpool canal, at the end of the day we all need our dreams.

star Kirsty Gibson

Our very own tattooed Lady – Kirsty is the voice you will hear at the end of the phone and the person that keeps us all in check and makes sure we know where we are going; geographically, emotionally and psychologically.

star Alex McKniff

The youngest member of the company, and the oldest looking.

Alex is an aspiring circus performer and is training to be a youth worker, Unfortunately he has far too much hair for his own good and we are hoping he will soon make a date with Mr Clipper.

Alongside circus he also enjoys outdoor pursuits, art and music.
